CUTHBERT PLAYS AN EXECELLENT KNOCK



On a blazing hot afternoon and an outfield of almost strawlike properties, Wooburn Narkovians won the toss and put Newbury into bat. Home side Newbury got off to a good start as Cuthbert\s first over cost eight runs thanks to some well timed shots on a runway of a wicket. However, Sullivan\s first ball accounted for Heelan, with Chivers snapping up the offering in the gully.



The footholes on the bowling crease saw the end of Cuthbert\s spell, but not before he took Miller\s wicket. The Chivers/Sullivan partnership struck again to dismiss Anstey, and Waxman, despite having problems with the footholes, rearranged Heelan and Herdman\s furniture. O\Sullivan\s stout resistance was also terminated by the rampant Waxman, while Cuthbert and Sullivan engineered the relay throw run out of Leatt. The sprightly Sullivan snapped up the last three wickets to finish with 5-53.



In reply, Ian Cuthbert and Phil Lawless started solidly, striking the occasional boundary and always maintaining the momentum. Lawless eventually fell to a lofted drive that ended in long-off\s hands. Ian Cuthbert continued unabated, driving and cutting with power, while brother Alan held firm at the other end.



Alan Cuthbert fell to an over-acrobatic catch by Miller, but his brother then upped the tempo, putting his teammates\ cars in danger with a succession of boundaries. He ended with an accomplished 77 not out as Wooburn won by eight wickets.
