EUROPEAN PIDGEON FLIES TO THE RESCUE

Good knocks from Dave Pidgeon and Paul Sullivan put Wooburn Narkovians on top in their Thames Valley Division 3 match against I.C.I. on Saturday. Asked to bat first, Wooburn\s openers put om 17 before both were out in quick succession. David Smith and Paul Cuthbert proceeded to repair the early damage, with Smith carving some tasty morsels over the cover region.

However, Wooburn once again lost two wickets for no runs with the score slipping to 58-4. Cuthbert was caught and bowled, and Smith had his furniture unceremoniously rearranged for 31. This brought together Pidgeon and skipper Sullivan, who has been sorely underused with the bat this season, and they safely negotiated a number of testing overs.

Pidgeon, who had spent much of the season playing in Europe, and had been struggling to come to terms with English wickets, opened up with some flowing strokes. Ably supported by the robust Sullivan, the paiur increased the socring tempo until Pidgeon fell for 89 out of a partnership of 162.

Chris Bateman\s stay was brief, but Jeff Morris pinched some useful runs along with the ever-lively Sullivan, as Wooburn completed their 52 overs on 231-6.

I.C.I. batted aggressively from the start, with Ian Rance extremely harsh on the short balls. However, a sharp catch by Pidgeon gave Wooburn a desperately needed breakthrough. Whitely also fell quickly to give Turner his second victim with the score on 52. Rance went on to make 58 before he was bowled by Bateman, and Morris then entered the fray, picking up the wicket of Bailey (20).

Morris then had Webb drive in the air to the long-on boundary where Pidgeon over-ran the ball, but then recovered to take the catch above his head. Sagoo fell to the rampant Morris, and the dangerous Thornton was superbly caught by stand-in keeper Sullivan. Morris struck again to end with figures of 12-2-37-4, but I.C.I. ended with a comfortabledraw on 184-8.
