SMITH SEES WOOBURN TO A NAIL BITING VICTORY
A fine innings by David Smith set Wooburn Narkovians up for a thrilling two wicket victory over Cookham Dean on Saturday. Smith struck a magnificent 93 in just 67 minutes and 68 balls to swing the match in Wooburn\s favour just when it seemed Cookham were heading for victory.
Cookham had earlier taken advantage of some tame bowling to reach 230-9. The top order had excelled, but the good platform was eroded as the later batsmen failed to capitalise, with Jeff Morris (4-32) wrapping up the innings.
Wooburn\s reply was a positive one as they attacked anything loose in search of the 231 required to win. The reply received a setback when Chris Sullivan (18) was dismissed with the score at 35. Paul Cooper (48) was joined by Smith in a stand of 137 to set Wooburn up for victory.
Following the dismissal of these two batsmen, Wooburn were left needing 14 runs off the final two overs, Cookham required two wickets. Phil Cuthbert made short work of the target, requiring just 5 balls to secure victory for Wooburn with seven balls to spare. Dave Partridge (4-42) was Cookham\s most successful bowler.
