A dismal middle order batting collapse brought North Maidenhead 2nd XI their second successive defeat in the Chilterns League on Saturday. Chasing 158 to win, they were cruising at 58-2 after 10 overs, but googly bowler Harry Pidgeon and medium pacer Kevin Czakan brought about a remarkable collapse as the champions slipped to 75-7. Game resistance from Phil Hunt (27) and Brian Stephens (14 not out) kept the result in doubt, but Paul Cuthbert returned to take 4-27 and bowl his side to victory.



Wooburn batted first and lost a couple of early wickets, with Sherlock Doris bowling tightly. Stuart Foster (24) played some good shots, but the key stand was between Nigel Turner (37) and Rob Smith (23 not out), with Turner one of the few batsmen to get on top of the attack. Phil Hunt (2-29) proved hard to get away, but the Wooburn innings was boosted by the big-hitting of Czakan, who made a quick 28 not out, including 17 off the last over.



In reply, North Maids were 6-2 after two overs. Justin Wakefield and Dave Fray then produced a remarkable stand. They put the 50 up in the seventh over with a series of fine shots, with Fray making 21 and Wakefield a superb 40. At one point North Maids needed 94 with eight wickets and 32 overs to spare, but Pidgeon (2-8 in eight overs) and Czakan (2-30) destroyed the middle order, and left Wooburn with yet another win over North Maids.
