SMALL PRODUCES A BIG DISPLAY



Wooburn Narkovians just managed to scramble a win in their Thames Valley League fixture against Old Latymerians on Saturday. The margin of victory, six wickets, was comfortable enough, and would have been more emphatic had Wooburn not had to race to beat the oncoming rainclouds, which they did with moments to spare.



Wooburn were indebted to their bowlers, who skittled Old Lats for just 69 runs, and the hero was Dave Small who returned personal best figures of 6-29 in 14 overs of miserly seam bowling. He was ably supported by some superb catching, notably from Andy Tennant, who pouched four chances. Wooburn wrapped up the final four wickets in four balls. This included a wonderful hat-trick for Small who demonstrated his importance to Wooburn by wrapping up the tail. On a day of notable bowling performances, Ian Cuthbert was for once over-shadowed, but taking three wickets for no runs in 2.1 overs did his already excellent bowling average no harm.



Aware of impending rain, Wooburn lost four wickets in knocking off the runs in just 14 overs. Angus Porter chipped in with 25 and David Pidgeon saw the team home with 18 not out, including 14 from the final over as the rain started to fall. All in all it was a good day for Wooburn who have now won three of their first four league games, with the other match having been rained off.
