A FINE unbeaten century from opener Dave Rogers carried Wooburn Narkovians 2nd XI to an unlikely two wicket victory over Chalfont St. Giles.
He received good support from Alan Cuthbert in an opening stand of 78, but thereafter, the other batsmen struggled, particularly against the testing medium pace of Fessey and Lancaster. Matt Curtis and Dave Appleby, promoted in Wooburn\s new-look batting line-up, resisted for a while without ever looking comfortable. After they were dismissed, the visitors hopes rested with new skipper Richard Barker, but he was soon undone by a good ball from Fessey. Rogers was then left with the tail, and was frustrated by Chalfont\s tactics of allowing him a single.
Nick Tappin, Chris Farmer, Grant Lewis and Qadeer all fell cheaply, and Rob Rogers joined his brother with 11 still needed from 5 overs. A nudge to fine leg for 2 and a crashing square cut for three by Rob eased the pressure, and Dave eventually flicked the winning boundary over square leg to reach a well-deserved hundred.
Earlier in the afternoon, Chalfont had been indebted to a hard-hit 98 from Lancaster as they reached a challenging 176-6 declared. The Chalfont batsmen has struggled early on against the accurate medium pace of Qadeer and Tappin. Wickets were hard to come by on the easy-paced pitch but so were runs, and Chalfont only managed 20 from the first 20 overs.
The complexion of the game changed with the arrival of Lancaster. He soon showed his liking for driving straight and through the cover areas. He did play and miss on a number of occasions, aiming expansive drives through the off-side, but deserved his luck and went on to his highest-ever score. Towards the end of the innings he took a heavy toll of Rob Rogers\ off-spinners, hit the short straight boundary with monotonous regularity. He eventually fell 2 short of a maiden century, well caught at deep point. For Wooburn, Qadeer bowled well on his debut, while Tappin was steady and Barker was always a threat.
