The 1st XI had a resounding victory at Amersham Hill on Saturday (27.04.02). Fielding first, Wooburn’s opening bowlers both struggled at first to come to terms with the sloping pitch, but James White got enough movement to pick up three early wickets and put Amersham on the back foot from the start.



Graham Dare was quickly introduced into the attack and bowled tightly, giving the batsmen few scoring opportunities on the slow-paced wicket. His miserly spell of 1 for 15 in 10 overs built pressure on the opposition and helped to induce some rash shots (and a run out courtesy of a direct hit from Ian Cuthbert).



Wickets continued to tumble, with Phil Day and Jeff Morris picking up a couple each, and it was only some controlled hitting from Amerham captain Goss that allowed them to reach any sort of reasonable total. He eventually fell to that well-known wicket-taking delivery, the Morris full toss, hitting it straight to Ian at deep mid-on, and Amersham Hill declared soon after on 139 for 9 off 47 overs.



It quickly became clear that the target was nowhere near enough for Amersham’s modest bowling line-up to defend. Ian looked in very little trouble in reaching 69 not out, while Dave Rogers survived a couple of miscues that didn’t go to hand before falling for 56 with the scores level. James finished the job with around 10 overs to spare.
