1st XI left hanging on for a draw

For the second week running, the 1sts were left hanging on for a draw in their Thames Valley League match at Wooburn Park on Saturday. This time it was ninth wicket pair Phil Day and Rob Rogers who frustrated opponents Boyne Hill 1sts, batting out the last eight overs in poor light to save the game.



Boyne Hill had earlier posted a testing 213-6, thanks largely to Warren Parker, whose classy 82 included some towering sixes. None of the Wooburn bowlers were able to contain Parker, although the course of the match would probably have been quite different if an early run out chance had been taken.



The Wooburn attack had some success against the rest of the Boyne Hill line-up, with James White’s 16-over spell rewarded with three wickets (including former Narkovian Tab Nawaz) and Ian Cuthbert picking up two (one of which was Parker) at the death.



Wooburn’s innings was very reminiscent of the previous week’s performance, with wickets falling at regular intervals, and it was only during a 58-run fourth wicket stand between Dave Rogers and Dave Pidgeon that hopes of a win were raised. But once Pidgeon was adjudged lbw for 27, Boyne Hill took control.



Following a rain break, and in deteriorating light, Osborne and Parker made inroads into the Wooburn batting. Dave Rogers’ luck finally ran out having made 72, when he popped up a simple catch off Parker, and it was left to skipper Phil Day and Rob Rogers to ward off the defeat, the Wooburn finishing on 151-8.
