The 1st XI had to settle for their fourth draw in six league games at Aldershot 2nds on Saturday as the lack of penetration in their bowling attack continues to be exposed on the flat tracks around the league.



For the second week running, the top six in the Wooburn line-up all reached double figures, with Dave Rogers again top scoring with 62. A total in excess of 200 seemed on the cards when Dave Pidgeon (33 not out) and Steve Blandford (27) were together, but a string of run outs checked the momentum so that the visitors finished on 191-5 from their 52 overs.



As Aldershot replied, it soon became apparent that the lifeless pitch was going to offer little help for the seamers and spin was quickly introduced. Blandford struck early to remove Grover, thanks to a sharp slip catch by Jeff Morris, but Varney and Dixon profited from some poorer fielding to put Aldershot in a strong position.



The game swung Wooburn’s way when Ian Cuthbert bowled Dixon for 36 and then enticed Varney to slice a drive into the covers where Pidgeon took a great catch wide to his left.



At the other end, Blandford, in the middle of a 20-over spell that yielded 4-50, also picked up a couple of wickets to give Wooburn hopes of a victory. But with five wickets down, needing under six an over, Aldershot showed little inclination to seek a win and the pitch was never going to give Wooburn’s bowlers enough help to bowl out the cautious opposition.



There was a brief flurry of runs at the end of the innings as Aldershot chased bonus points and Wooburn tried to tempt the batsmen into some rash shots, which allowed the home side to finish on 176-6.
