The 1st XI followed one of their best bowling performances in the league this year with what was undoubtedly their worst batting display, crashing to a 67-run defeat against Hillingdon 1st XI at Wooburn Park.



Hillingdon were put in to bat on a flat track that offered little help for the bowlers. However, James White and Phil Day made early inroads into the visitors’ batting line-up, reducing them to 40-3.



Firstly Hanratty and Harper, then King and White, put together stands of 40-plus to take the score up to 129-5, but Wooburn’s tight bowling meant that, by now, overs were running out. Jeff Morris took advantage of Hillingdon’s attempts to up the scoring rate by cleaning up the lower order to finish with 4-31 as the visitors subsided to 147 all out.



Wooburn’s response got off to a poor start with Ian Cuthbert falling in the second over and things went from bad to worse as they failed to come to terms with Hillingdon’s steady, but far from unplayable, bowling attack.



Dave Rogers hung around for a while, making 27, Dave Pidgeon and Richard Barker both made double figures, but that was the sum total of the home side’s resistance. By the time Wooburn’s fragile tail had succumbed, they had mustered a paltry 80.



Wooburn can’t afford many more performances like this if they are to avoid an end-of-season relegation battle.
