Match Report

The return of the three Tenny\s failed to change the 1st XI\s fortunes as they went down by four wickets to league leaders Wokingham 2nds. Wooburn competed well for much of the game, but ultimately the visitors\ greater strength in depth proved the difference.

Opting to bat first, Wooburn started well through Dave Rogers, Ian Cuthbert and Andy Tennant, passing the 100 mark with only one wicket down and plenty of overs in hand. Ian was in excellent form, holding the innings together with a cultured 80, but after the dismissal of Andy T for a solid 32, he lacked support from the other end.

For Wokingham, Deen bowled a tight spell of off-spin, after their early seam bowling had been despatched with contempt. Duncan also came back well, after an expensive start, and Wooburn middle order struggled to get the ball away. A final total of 186 was disappointing after the fine start, but at least gave the bowlers something to defend.

When Wokingham batted, Mark Tennant struck an early blow, trapping with his inswinger, but Cox and Brinsford then put together a stand of 75 for the second wicket before Richie Barker pulled off an outstanding one-handed catch at mid off to get rid of Cox. Barker then bowled Marsh, but Deen and Brinsford then consolidated, taking the score to 147 before Phil Day got one through Brinsford\s defences.

Two further wickets gave Wooburn real hope, with Gilbey run out, and Day knocking back Hayter\s middle stump with 34 still needed. Sadly, this was to be our last success, as the experienced Deen pushed and nudged Wokingham to victory.

With Aldershot 2nds picking up 25 points, a gap of 16 points has opened up at the bottom, and the 1st XI now have a real relegation battle on their hands. Improved availability could be crucial if a return to Division 4 is to be avoided.
