Wooburn Narks 1sts’ inability to bowl teams out threatens to condemn them to relegation this season. Another disappointing defeat at home to Gerrards Cross 2nds on Saturday leaves them without a victory in nine games.



Wooburn took advantage of a lifeless wicket and the visitors’ below-strength bowling attack to give skipper Phil Day the opportunity to declare after 47 overs on a healthy 222-4. James White, Dave Rogers and Dave Pidgeon all scored sixties (Rogers passing 1,000 runs for the season in the process).



Unfortunately, Wooburn’s bowlers struggled to exert any pressure early on and allowed Gerrards Cross to get off to a flying start.



A couple of very difficult chances went to ground before Andy Tennant held a sharp slip catch off his brother Mark’s bowling to break the opening partnership, and Sam Roberts snapped up another good catch in the gully off Day to dismiss the other opener.



The middle order kept Gerrards Cross up with the required run rate, but it was a fifth-wicket stand of 66 between youngster Thorne (41) and Eykyn (33 not out) that took the game away from Wooburn, bringing the visitors to within 22 runs of victory.



The reintroduction of the sparingly used Jeff Morris (3-38 off 11 overs) threatened to turn the game Wooburn’s way as he removed Thorne and his replacement (thanks to another fine catch by Andy Tennant) with the score on 201.



Mark Tennant then added another wicket with the total unchanged to leave the visitors seven down. But Eykyn and Luddy steered Gerrards Cross home with 10 balls to spare.
