The 1st XI picked up a much needed home win over Stoke Green 1sts on Saturday, ending a run of nine league games without a victory.



The visitors batted first and, although somewhat disconcerted by the slowness of the outfield, got off to a good start thanks to Simpson and Akram. However, once James White had made the first breakthrough, removing Akram for 27, the game swung Wooburn’s way.



White soon added two more victims – one bamboozled by an excellent slower ball – and later picked up another to finish a fine spell with figures of 4-56 from 17 overs. At the other end Richie Barker took the key wicket of Simpson for 42, at which point Stoke Green’s hopes of a big score began to recede.



Jules Greenaway made sure that Wooburn didn’t let their opponents of the hook with three wickets for 15 runs in a seven-over burst, and the Stoke Green innings fell away to 134 all out.



The visitors had an opportunity to put immediate pressure on Wooburn but dropped Dave Rogers twice before he had scored. Rogers continued to ride his luck and together with Ian Cuthbert, who looked much more assured, added 78 for the first wicket, before Cuthbert fell for 43.



Rogers finally succumbed for 30 but James White (32) and Dave Pidgeon (15 not out) continued their recent good form, batting sensibly to steer the home side to a six-wicket win.
