Match Report

The 1st XI’s battle to avoid relegation received a major boost on Saturday when they secured a nervy four-wicket win at bottom-of-the-table Datchet.

The home side batted first and Nagalingham began in customary fashion with a couple of sixes. However, unlike previous encounters between the two sides, he was unable to convert his rapid start into a major score, holing out to Ian Cuthbert in the deep off James White for 29.

After Nagalingham’s dismissal, runs were much harder to come by. White picked up two more wickets, ending with 3-34, while Jeff Morris kept the batsmen in check during a 17-over spell of 2-31.

Wooburn’s surprise package, however, was the offspin of Martin Tennant. Extracting considerable turn and bounce, he finished with four well-deserved wickets, including top scorer Hall (37), for just 22 runs. Datchet did manage to bat out their 52 overs, reaching 140-9.

The Wooburn reply got off to a miserable start, as the visitors slumped to 27-3 off 17 overs. Dave Pidgeon (26) and Andy Tennant (15) set about repairing the damage, but when they both fell in quick succession, Wooburn were in danger of an embarrassing defeat at 67-5, with the required run rate up to five an over.

A 48-run stand between Martin Tennant and Richie Barker turned the game back Wooburn’s way as the home side’s lack of bowling resources was finally exposed – Dick (3-55) bowled unchanged for 23 overs, while Kerns (2-63) contributed 18 overs.

The visitors’ nerves were tested again when Tennant was caught behind off Kerns for 21, with 26 still needed to win in six overs. But Jeff Morris demonstrated the value of experience in a tight situation as he added a quick-fire 17 not out to help an impressive Barker, whose 35 included two sweetly driven sixes, steer Wooburn to victory with 11 balls to spare.
