A poor fielding performance was one of the main reasons why the 1st XI had to settle for a draw against Aldershot 2nds at Wooburn Park on Saturday.
Far too frequent lapses in both catching and ground fielding allowed Aldershot to post a total of 205-8, with Varney taking full advantage to top-score with 77. For the second week running Martin Tennant bowled his off-spinners with good effect, picking up 4-37.
Looking for a good start to their run chase, Wooburn instead lost both openers for ducks. James White led the recovery with a fine 75, putting on a century stand with Ian Cuthbert, who made 33.
However, the run rate began to climb well beyond six an over, and with the middle order going after the bowling, particularly Andy Tennant with a quick-fire 22, wickets fell regularly.
With seven down and 28 runs needed from three overs, Wooburn settled for a draw rather than give their fellow relegation candidates the chance of an important win, finishing on 180-7.
