The Sunday XI toiled hard in the sun at Wooburn Park but had to settle for the better end of a draw against Old Paludians.



To the relief of the home side, skipper Jeff Morris won the toss and chose to bat first on a wicket with very little pace or bounce. Steve Butcher took an early liking to the well-flighted spin on offer from the opening spell of Long senior, despatching one delivery on to the pavilion roof, before slicing the same bowler to cover.



Dave Rogers completed his second half-century of the weekend before being undone by the lack of bounce, and it was left to Jeff Morris to up the tempo of the innings, combining sweet timing and judicious use of the bottom hand to score a rapid 58. Richie Barker also contributed some useful blows, allowing Wooburn to declare on 191-6.



Old Pals’ reply got off to a bad start when Adam Morris swooped to run out Dalton. Meanwhile, 14-year-old George Jafari was troubling the batsmen with impressive pace considering the slowness of the pitch.



After Jeff Morris and Richie Barker (employing his rarely seen slow bowling) had picked up three wickets between them, the captain left the youngsters to take the strain, with colts Chris Hall, Adam Morris and Ben Sturgess each taking a wicket. However, largely thanks to Johnson’s 40 not out, Old Paludians held out to finish on 163-7.
