Skipper Jeff Morris contributed good performances with bat and ball, but it was his generosity in lending two fielders to the eight-man visitors that was ultimately to decide the result of the Sunday XI\s fixture against Old Fullerians.
Not only did the two extra players save the visitors many more runs than their final 11-run winning margin but, with two overs to go, George Jafari popped up to claim the catch that ended the match.
Wooburn had only ten players themselves, and resembled a fathers and sons side with the names Morris, Sturgess and Hall appearing twice on the teamsheet. This mixture of youth and experience held Old Fullerians down to a total of 153, thanks largely to a miserly spell of 3-13 from 13 overs from Jeff and 2-32 from Richie Barker.
Wooburn’s reply struggled to make any headway early on, with wickets falling regularly, but when Jeff joined Dave Rogers at the crease, some much needed impetus was added.
While the pair were together, the game seemed to be heading Wooburn’s way, but after Jeff was dismissed for 46 and Dave followed a few overs later for 60, the writing was on the wall. Wooburn reached 142 before George struck the coup de grâce.
