TOUGH TAIL FOR WOOBURN



Wooburn Narkovians came agonisingly close to dispatching Royal Ascot in a rain swept Thames Valley League match on Saturday. In the end, the elements and a brave escape act by the Ascot tail conspired to frustrate some admirable Wooburn bowling.



Wooburn were put into bat and openers Rob Smith and Rob Rogers progressed steadily, yet found it hard to score quickly on the damp pitch. Rogers was bowled by Parsley for a patient 10, both Cuthbert brothers made 9 and Richie Barker 11, the last three falling to Hedges. Smith then settled into the anchor role, allowing first Waxman, then Kevin Czakan to keep the scoreboard moving. Smith finished unbeaten on 62 as the innings closed on 145-6.



Ascot\s openers were aided by some wayward early bowling, allowing them to settle. But the introduction of Phil Day and Rogers heralded a change of fortunes. Day removed Abrams and English, and then had Wiggett caught behind by Steve Sweet. Harding offered staunch resistance, but when he edged a ball from Rogers, Ascot knuckled down for the draw. Parsley managed to block up one end, and despite renewed efforts from Rogers, removing Allen\s off stump, the tail clung on at the end.
