WAXMAN AND TAPPIN PROVE A HANDFUL

Wooburn Narkovians 2nd XI notched a convincing win over Bracknell 2nds on Saturday, strengthening their mid-table position in Thames Valley Division 3.

Wooburn got off to the perfect start as stand-in skipper Rob Smith won an important toss, and was able to put the opposition in after heavy overnight rain had soaked the pitch at Bracknell. Wooburn\s new ball pairing of Tim Waxman and David Small quickly took control in the helpful conditions. Waxman\s pace and bounce was particularly threatening, but it was Small who made the breakthrough, having Gavin caught at short mid wicket. Waxman then removed Impey and Henly, both caught off the glove as they tried to evade short deliveries.

Tappin, coming on in place of Small, struggled to find his length at first. However, he got away with it as King flashed at a short ball outside his off stump, only to edge it, and wicket-keeper Steve Sweet took a superb one-handed catch low down to his right. In Tappin\s next over, Dewick attempted a hook at another short ball, sending the ball high into the air off the top edge. Waxman set off from his fine leg position and, running away from the wicket, caught the ball in his left hand at full stretch.

Charles\ brave resistance came to an end as he also hooked the ball up in the air to fine leg, where this time Waxman was able to take a more routine catch. Robbie Rogers wrapped up the innings, taking the wickets of Tony Henly and Wells in successive balls. Promising young seamer Tappin finished with the slightly flattering figures of 4-7 whle Waxman, the pick of the bowlers, took 2-19 and Rogers ended with 2-0.

By the time it was Wooburn\s turn to bat, the pitch had dried out into a reasonable batting wicket. There was still some help for the bowlers, but none of the exaggerated bounce evident earlier in the match. Wooburn\s established opening batsmen Dave Rogers and Rob Smith put the result beyond doubt with an opening stand of 38, with Rogers contributing 26 before he played over the top of a yorker. Smith (14) and Alan Cuthbert (13) promptly finished the job to see the side home by nine wickets.
