Match Report

2nds get that winning feeling

It may not be pretty, but it is mightily effective. For the third week running, the 2nd XI put in a disciplined bowling and fielding effort to leave a simple target for victory. A target duly achieved with nearly 25 overs to spare.

In truth, this win was achieved over a poor side playing poorly. Farnham Royal 3rds were no match for our 2nds, but they might have expected to have put up more of a fight than they did.

After being put in on an absolute belter of a pitch, Farnham Royal struggled from the start. Ben Sturgess removed skipper Jackson for 3, in the fourth over, and this set the trend of the innings. Royal did reach 30-2 in the 10th over, but then spent 14 more overs progress to 39-5.

Only Jacobs (43) and Nicholas (23) put up any real resistance, and while they were together Royal might have had hopes of posting a respectable total. However, Ben Sturgess returned to take the important wicket of Jacobs, and the innings fell away again. Royal did manage to survive into the 51st over, but the scorers were not overly troubled, and a final total of 106 was never going to be enough.

Jeff Morris finished with 5-38, while Ben Sturgess (2-36) and Graham Dare (2-24) gave excellent support at the other end.

The Wooburn innings started briskly, with Paul Cooper looking in good form. A ten-wicket win looked on the cards until Cooper dragged one onto his stumps with the score on 39.

The club\s foreign star, Michael Watson, then joined our chairman Angus Porter in an unbroken stand of 68 for the second wicket. The chairman was in good fettle, feasting on a series of short pitched deliveries, while Watson took the opportunity to spend some time at the crease before playing some nice strokes through the offside.

A comfortable win was achieved by 6.00 o\clock, giving plenty of time for an impromptu football match in front of the pavilion. This win, our third in succession, takes the 2nd XI to the top of the table. But let\s not get carried away, we were briefly on top last season, and we all know what happened then.
