2nds storm to Record League win
The 2nd XI made it four wins in a row with a 194-run thrashing of NPL Teddington 3rds, opening up a 15 point lead at the top of TVL Division 6B.
Wooburn were helped by losing the toss, which enabled them to go for maximum points after NPL put them in. They got off to a solid start, through Angus Porter and emergency opener Rob Rogers. The Robster had NPL\s bowlers scratching their heads at the start, but once he started locating the ball, runs started to flow. Both openers benefited from dropped catches, and they went on to compile an opening stand of 93.
Robbie\s dismissal for 40 only increased NPL\s misery. Alan Cuthbert was next in, and demonstrated his return to form with a flurry of boundaries. Porter was also going well, pulling the short and not so short balls with ease. He went on to complete his sixth hundred for the club, finally going on to 109, before deciding to let Stuart Savage have a go. Watch out for another ton next week.
The assault on the NPL bowling continued, until Savage (20) and Cuthbert (72) fell to successive long hops from Parks. Wickets then fell in the chase for quick runs until the declaration came at 285-7 after 46 overs.
NPL got off to the worst possible start, when the wily Jeff Morris, retaining the old ball, squeezed a yorker through Pestridge\s defences. The NPL skipper has been the mainstay of their batting, and it was a big blow to their chances of survival.
The NPL innings was dominated by Hatch, who made a hard hit 54 with 10 boundaries. All the other batsmen struggled against the spin of Morris and the pace of Graham Dare and Dave Small. Ben Sturgess nipped in with the important wicket of Hatch, before a back injury brought a premature end to his spell.
Smally reproduced some of his Ploughman\s form to destroy NPL\s lower order, in tandem with Graham Dare, who bagged a couple of wickets himself. NPL\s final total of 91 left them just 194 runs short. A record Wooburn margin of victory in a league match.
Rob Rogers distinguished himself by opening both batting and bowling. The question was asked as to whether that has happened before, and the answer is yes. Loads of times, often featuring the names of Ian Cuthbert and James White. Phil Day also sneaked in there, strangely during his 2nd XI captaincy days. A page will be added to the record section in due course.
