Despite never being favourites in this game, the 2nd XI lost to Farnham Royal 3rd XI by the narrow margin of 13 runs in a high scoring game played on Burnham\s reserve ground. Once again, Derek Milsom led the way with a superb 119, marshalling the lower order magnificently after a middle order collapse had threatened to undermine the run chase. Only 10 balls remained when the last wicket fell, much to the relief of the \home\ team.



Farnham Royal opted to bat after winning the toss, as is the current trend. Sav would certainly have done the same. They started well on a pitch where the ball generally kept low. Skipper Jackson hit a powerful 66 at the top of the innings, taking advantage of the lightning fast outfield.



Wooburn came back well in the middle of the innings and wickets fell steadily, including that of the genial \Psycho\, whose audacious plan to take guard four feet down the pitch was perhaps not particularly well thought out (although his furious excavations on a good length caused some alarm among the Wooburn players).



After a slightly wayward opening spell, admittedly after a long lay-off through injury, Phil \Curtley\ Cuthbert rediscovered that metronomic accuracy we know so well and was unlucky not pick up more wickets. At 195-7, the Narks had hopes of giving themselves a manageable target, but Jacobs and Baptiste rode their luck to add a frustrating 77 for the eighth wicket, Royal declaring on 272 after 49 overs.



The Wooburn reply started well, Angus and Derek adding 76 for the first wicket before Angus departed for 33. This wicket triggered a top order collapse, and the strong position built by the openers slipped away as Wooburn found themselves 153-6. However, Derek was still there and chase continued in partnership with his son Graham, much to the delight of the magnanimous \Psycho\.



The Milsom combination took the score to 210, when Graham was out for an excellent 14. Tom Lees then helped add another 20 when Derek was finally caught at mid wicket for 119. At 231-9, Wooburn still needed another 42, but Tom and Phil continued to play their shots. Phil managed to hit two boundaries, despite a painful right hand.



At the start of the penultimate over, 15 runs were needed. A single came from the first ball, but Tom\s brave effort was then ended, bowled driving over a yorker for 19. Royal\s keeper \celebrated\ by kicking the stumps out of the ground, and why not?
