Jordan so near and yet so far

Full Match Scorecard

16 year old David Jordan almost became one the club\s youngest ever century scorers when he narrowly missed out on the magical three figures aginst Twyford and Ruscombe on Sunday.  Records would suggest that this is still held by David Smith (where is he now?) who we believe scored his first ever century in senior cricket when aged 16 back in the early 1980\s.  Jordan\s knock of 92 was the backbone of Wooburn\s innings whilst he was supported by contributions of 31 from Cooper and 30 from Johnson.  With a youthful team of six players under the age of 17, Wooburn managed to rattle up a score of 226 - 7 by making full use of a good wicket, one short boundary and an ever quickening outfield.  On a glorious afternoon it was Jordan\s knock that was the highlight as he gradually opened up with some highly entertaining stroke play whilst occassionally keeping the fielders in the match.  He moved smoothly through the 50\s and 60\s before suddenly finding the scoreboard showing him in the late 80\s.  It was at this stage that he admitted to our match correspondent that he “suddenley felt nervous”.  Many a player has come to grief in the nervous nineties and this unfortunately happened to Jordan.  With time well and truly on his side he was bowled for 92 by Downs leaving him to contemplate what might have been .... and less time for his exam revision!!  A swift flurry of runs from the returning Dave Small and new boy Sharma saw Wooburn declare on 226 - 7.

The Twyford reply seemed to be petering out at 60 - 5 however some lusty blows form Fort and Downs brought them closeer to Wooburn\s total than seemed likley after the opening exchanges.  The ever economical Tom Lees and reliable Morris kept the scoring rate down and gradually took wickets.  Seager opened with an array of deliveries that caught the batsman by surprise and Morris weaved his magic which ended up with another 5 wicket haul.  A couple of run outs near the end finally saw Wooburn close in on a victory which was achieved with 4 overs to spare.
