173 - 7
172 - 8
After a week of unsettled and overcast weather, Wooburn and Bledlow Ridge played out a closely fought match under glorious August sun. Following a trend he set in 1995, skipper for the day Matt Curtis yet again failed with the toss and a young and enthusiastic Wooburn side took to the field.
Straight from the off the bowlers found their line and length and the Bledlow Ridge openers found it hard work. Wal Hussain took the first of three wickets in his second over and continued to hurry the batsmen whilst Dave Jordan frequently passed the outside edge. With wickets falling all around him M.Beattie held up his end and by the time Hussain finished his first spell the Ridge were struggling on 45 for 5.
Matt Paine replaced Hussain at the river end and was unable to find his rhythm adapting to his new run up. However, if the batsmen thought things were going to get easier they were wrong, as after a few wides and no balls he soon found his range and bowled with real pace and hostility, being unlucky to take just the one wicket.
Next up came the two little un’s James Nolan and Robert Hall. Again any illusions of being able to break away were curtailed by the tightest two spells of the innings. Both young men kept the ball up to the bat, moving the ball through the air and tying up the batsmen, with Hall adding to his excellent run out by ending the innings of M.Beattie.
At this stage skipper Matt Curtis tried to juggle the bowling between himself, George Taylor and Sam Roberts. With some good sound batting, M.Harris (60) and E.Beattie (47) managed to take the Ridge to 172 for 8.
The Wooburn reply was started by Andy Johnson and new boy Andy Porter. Porter in particular batted well for his 26. After a good start and excellent knocks from Sam Roberts (30) and Kevin Dolan (38) the run rate never got out of reach and with 3 overs to go Matt Curtis joined George Taylor with 23 needed to win. With a few streaky shots and some sharp singles this came down to 12 off the last over to be bowled by the youngster Ben Wood.
Good running and a no ball saw 6 being needed off the last 2 balls. George then decided that a fantastic day’s cricket, played in a wonderful spirit, deserved the classic finish and duly dispatched the ball over the mid-wicket boundary.
