Wooburn Narkovians 2nd XI defeated High Wycombe 3rd XI by 28 runs in a closely fought contest at Wooburn Park. Put into bat, Wooburn started well against Wycombe’s youthful opening attack. After Derek Milsom’s departure, Angus Porter and Alan Cuthbert then added 68 for the second wicket, taking the score to 95 before Porter was bowled by young leg-spinner Jack Scriven for 45.



Wycombe had now introduced the experienced Tim Scriven into the attack, and he proceeded to work his way through the Wooburn batting. A promising start was quickly undermined as 8 wickets fell for just 41, including Cuthbert for 35. At 136-9 after 36 overs, Wooburn were in trouble, but last pair Rob Hall and Pete Harper added a crucial 29 for the last wicket to take the total to 165.



The Wycombe reply started poorly against the accurate swing bowling of Imran Ishaq and Dave Jordan. They found themselves 33-3 when Russell joined his skipper Patten. Patten had looked in good touch, hitting two sixes early on, but he found it tougher going against the slow bowling of Rob Rogers. The Wycombe batsmen went right on the defensive, allowing the bowlers to dictate terms.



Eventually, when Patten did get a ball to hit, he could only top edge a catch to Milsom at deep square leg, departing for 51. Ogborne and Russell then added 38 before two wickets for Rogers brought Scriven to the crease. Russell’s wild swing and stumping opened the door for Wooburn, Rogers taking advantage to improve his tally, with Pete Selleck taking the final wicket. Rogers finished with 6-52, while Scriven was left unbeaten on 17 for the visitors.



A keenly contested match finished with Wooburn the victors by 28 runs, and the Narks have now moved up to 7th place in a very even Division 5B of the Thames Valley League.
