An understrength Wooburn Narkovians 1st team slumped to a seven-wicket defeat at second-placed Slough 3rds on Saturday, all but ending their hopes of promotion this season.
Choosing to bat first on a firm, flat track, Wooburn got off to a good start with Andy Tennant and Dave Rogers adding 85 in 20 overs for the first wicket. However, the introduction of left-arm spinner Sharath changed the complexion of the game. Turning the ball both ways and extracting considerable bounce, the Slough bowler compiled figures of 5-22 from 17 overs, including the wickets of Rogers for 36 and Tennant for a well-made 70. Skipper Dave Small (22) was the only other player to make double figures in the visitors’ weakened batting line-up, which was missing four regulars, and it was left to James Dolan to steer the side past the 175 mark for some extra batting points. The innings ended in the 52nd over with the score on 176.
Wooburn knew that quick wickets would be vital if they were to defend their mediocre total. Unfortunately for the visitors, luck wasn’t with them early on as the Slough openers got the innings off to a rapid start. Jetty eventually holed out off Mark Tennant’s bowling for 37, but Chaggar (45) and Din (49) continued to accumulate runs fairly easily, taking the score past 100 with few alarms.
In search of a breakthrough, the Wooburn captain turned to youth in the shape of 15-year-old Dolan and 13-year-old Ben Barker, and both bowled well, picking up a wicket apiece. However, Iqbal brought the game to a rapid conclusion with a quick-fire 43, although Rhys Wheeler will consider himself unlucky not to have dismissed the Slough batsman in the final over. As it was, the home side cruised home with seven wickets and 11 overs to spare.
