Match Report
Barker on form against the Marlow Parkers
Richie Barker yet again cemented his place as the Sunday XI\s specialist no. 4 batsman with a fine knock of 75* to see Wooburn home. Unfortunately, due to his astonishingly late arrival, a steward\s inquiry has been initiated and it is expected that Barker will be fined the princely sum of 200 sunday runs which he must donate to a charity of his choice.
After losing the toss, Park decided to bat and immediately cpt. Buxton set about making the most of the missing Narks, namely Messrs. Taylor and Barker x3. With attacking shots his order of the day, he managed 46 before perishing. With Marlow Park going for their shots, wickets were always going to come for the exceptionally young Wooburn team (which featured 7 colts under the age of 16, and had an average age of 21; an average which would have been much lower if it weren\t for pseudo-birthday boy Kevin Dolan who was 50 the following day. Many happy returns Kevin - Help the Aged should be in contact soon).
Craigmile 27, Hawkins (D) 25 and Way 16 were the other main scorers for Park whilst the wickets were shared between C Ashford 3-32, R Hall 1-17, J Dolan 1-29, B Barker 2-29, and R Barker 2-13. At one stage it looked as though a total of 200 was on the cards, but some tight bowling restricted Marlow to a competitive total of 175.
After a glorious tea which has been nominated for tea of the season, openers Wheeler and Furlong strode to the crease. If Wooburn were to chase down such a total, a good start was a necessity. In true Wooburn style, the top 3 were back in the pavilion with barely 40 runs on the board and the Narks sent in their sunday specialist in the form of Richard Barker.
On his way to 75* he was ably supported by a superbly measured and mature innings by none other than George Taylor, who had decided to put the trademark hoik to cow corner in the locker.. albeit not for the whole innings. Highlight of his knock was a straight six which easily cleared the sightscreen, landing somewhere on the next football pitch. After having seen said shot, Matt Curtis (who is sadly leaving us for pastures new), left a happy man. I should mention that not wanting to be outdone, Barker struck a similar shot into the river a few overs later. But no one likes a show-off.
After Taylor was caught and bowled to a tired shot, a cameo innings of 17 from Rob Hall who scored quickly and with style, effectively saw Wooburn home. The positively ancient Jordan at the age of 19 hit the winning runs and was especially careful not to give Marlow any chances in the 3 balls that he faced. He was certainly not dropped at cover point.
Epilogue:
Kevin Dolan captained excellently.
