EXPERIENCE PAYS VICTORY DIVIDEND
Wooburn Narkovians 2nd XI continued their roller coaster season with a fine victory over Redingensians at Wooburn Park on Saturday in the Thames Valley League, to earn themselves a satisfying 25 points.
The Narks were indebted to the verteran spin triplets of Harry Pidgeon, Alan Coombe and Peter Harper, who shared seven wickets in a fine display of guile and composure of a kind that has scarcely been displayed by their juniors in recent weeks. The trio, with a combined cricketing experience of 120 years, left the victors mesmerised with tantalising turn, spin, loop and flight.
Batting first, Wooburn reached 200 for only the third time this season, thanks to an opening stand of 121 between skipper Dave Pidgeon (69) and Rob Smith (45). The useful total was solidified by knocks of 35 from Andy Tennant, and 26 from plucky David Smith. Anwar turned in useful figures late on, ending with four wickets.
Redingensians started confidently against the spin of Pidgeon senior and Rob Rogers, even if the thought was always present that the Wooburn skipper\s refusal to take the new ball would be vindicated. With the score of 61 it was Pidgeon who took two wickets in two balls with violent googlies.
The classic yorker was produced by Smith to claim another victim and Wooburn began to sense an upturn in fortunes. However, it was the left arm seam of promising Mark Tennant that broke a threatening stand of 56 runs between Messer and Ison, and claimed what was arguably the most important wicket of the day.
The gate was then left open for Coombe and Harper to make inroads into the rest of the batting and secure the victory. Wooburn, now known in their division as the result specialists, travel to Old Meadonians tomorrow, without their experienced threesome.
