CUTHBERT IN A HURRY TO WIN



Wooburn Narkovians 2nds made it two wins out of two in the Thames Valley League on Saturday, with a comprehensive nine wicket success at Newbury. In hot conditions, Newbury decided to bat on winning the toss. They started well, with Stamp and Arrowsmith posting fifty for the first wicket against Wooburn\s new ball attack of Tim Waxman and Dave Small. Waxman bowled with good pace, but little luck, while Small\s accuracy threatened to frustrate the openers. It was skipper Phil Day who made the breakthrough, knocking back Stamp\s off stump.



The introduction of slow bowler Rob Rogers proved significant. He soon had Arrowsmith holing out at mid off, and then removed Stanton and Bartlett with well flighted deliveries, Bartlett to a startling catch by Dilip Gandesha at square leg. Danger was then well caught by Steve Sweet behind the wicket, and Mills was clean bowled by Day. Gregory put up some resistance, reaching 32 before hitting across the line once too often. Waxman then returned to take the final two wickets, leaving Wooburn a victory target of 137. Rob Rogers finished with the excellent figures of 6-38.



The Wooburn innings also started well, Rob Smith and Dave Rogers adding 47 for the first wicket. Both looked in complete control against the Newbury bowling, and it came as something of a surprise when Rogers was caught behind off Digweed. Alan Cuthbert then joined Smith, and these two took Wooburn to victory with an unbroken partnership of 90.



Smith led the way with some punishing square cuts before fatigue began to take its toll. Cuthbert then took over, putting the short ball away well on both sides of the wicket. Smith staggered to his half-century first, followed soon after by Cuthbert, as Wooburn strolled home.
