BOWLERS TAKE ALL THE CREDITS
Wooburn Narkovians 2nd XI\s good start to the season ended with a two wicket defeat at the hands of newcomers Stoke Green. In a low-scoring game, on a pitch offering encouragement to all the bowlers, the result was in doubt right to the end. Indeed, had Quelch been caught with the score on 92-7, the outcome could have been very different.
Wooburn batting first and, with a number of regulars missing from the batting line up, much depended on openers Dave Rogers and Alan Cuthbert. The managed to add 36 for the first wicket, in difficult conditions, and were beginning to look comfortable when Cuthbert was surprisingly given out leg before wicket. Richard Barker then joined Rogers, and these two took the score to 70 before disaster struck. Barker unluckily played on to Simpson, then Rogers was bowled and Phil Day went first ball to leave Wooburn in trouble on 72-4.
Rob Rogers and Steve Sweet attempted to steady the ship, but both found scoring difficult. Rogers began to hit the ball well, but fell trying to hit the ball over cover. Sweet dropped anchor, with runs hard to come by. Wooburn did manage to bat the 52 overs, but an eventual score of 120-9 did not seem enough.
Stoke Green found batting just as difficult. Day and Barker gave nothing away in the opening overs, and were rewarded with the wickets of Cordery, Aziz and Ahmed. Woodford and Aslam started the recovery, which was continued by Swadling, after Woodford fell to Barker. Swadling played the perfect innings for the conditions, defensive, but always ready to hit the bad ball.
It took an excellent outswinger from Barker to remove Aslam, the ball clipping his off stump. Simpson was then superbly caught by Sweet behind the stumps and Swadling eventually lost patience against Rogers, swinging across the line. Wooburn were right back in the match. Quelch then swung wildly at Moreby, sending the ball high in the air towards long on. The catch went down, and by the time Day had Quelch caught by Dave Rogers at short mid-off, only five were required for victory. Morris joined Holdship, and Stoke Green scrambled home with just two wicket intact.
