Opening day win at Hurley

A mixed Wooburn XI defied the freezing conditions to record a comfortable seven wicket win at Hurley. In a match of 45 overs per side, Wooburn passed Hurley\s 175-9 with 8.2 overs to spare.



Hurley chose to bat after winning the toss, prefering the warmth of the dressing room to the biting cold wind on the field. However, the harsh conditions didn\t prevent Richie Barker from conducting his wicket inspection in shorts and t-shirt. The saner members of the Wooburn side opted for at least two sweaters, and even that wasn\t enough for some.



On to the game, and Hurley had looked well placed at 104-2 in the 27th over, with Day (37) and Allen (33) going well. The turning point came when Wooburn debutant, Sharafat Ali, bowled Day with an off-cutter, and Hurley struggled from then on. There were useful contributions from Brench (19) and Cole (18), but a final total of 175-9 was a little below par after their good start.



Wooburn\s bowlers had a good workout. Dave Pidgeon was the leading wicket-taker (2-27), and new boys Ali and Tim Hall acquitted themselves well on the slow pitch.



The Wooburn reply started well in gloomy light, with Dave Rogers and Jon Nelson adding 75 in quick time. Rogers fell on 30, when he mis-shovelled to mid wicket, but Nelson went on to make 49. James White struck an unbeaten 56 to finish things off, saving the rest of the batting from further exposure to the elements.
