Wooburn Colts Hold Out For Draw

An idyllic English Summers day, in April, was the setting for Wooburn\s first Sunday match of the season at Little Marlow on possibly the best batting track we will use this season. Due to injury and illness George Taylor called upon the Barker Boys and ex- Wooburn legend Jeff Morris to get the team up to 10 players and therefore negotiated that Wooburn should bowl first.

Richie Barker and Matt Paine bowled with bounce an pace on an amazingly hard wicket for April, but the Little Marlow openers were keen to get some runs under their belts and batted positively taking the score past fifty in just 10 overs, and when Glennester passed fifty he generously retired. Ryan also passed fifty but was then but was run out by some sharp fielding by Matt Paine. George turned to spin early with Ashford and Clarke who both bowled well and the run rate slowed, Clarke was rewarded when he bowled Bradley with a beautifully flighted delivery. An Ex-Wooburn colt, Mark Fisher, came in produced a succession of sweetly timed boundaries, he passed fifty quickly but then mistimed a drive from Jeff Morris and Andrew White took a great catch at long off. George turned to the Barker Boys to bowl out the innings and the both bowled nicely picking up a wicket each, leaving only Richard wicketless in the family this weekend.

Wooburn’s target of 235 in approx forty overs was always going to be tough with a young side. Jeff and Dave Rogers opened up and took the score to 20 in 5 overs but unluckily Jeff chopped onto his own stumps attempting to cut Mansoor. Phil Clarke batted spiritedly but mistimed a drive and was caught of Slatter. Andrew White also batted sensibly but was caught behind off Findlay. Barker and Rogers batted positively and took the score past 100 but Dave also chopped onto his own stumps and then Richard holed out attempting to hit West over the top. Once Charlie Ashford, George Taylor and Matt Paine had also perished this only the left the Barker Boys who batted sensibly to hold out for a respectable draw.
