Wooburn\s 1st XI came within five runs of victory when the visited Langleybury on Saturday. A microscopic ground with a sloping wicket meant that runs were always going to be of a premium, and the Wooburn bowling attack lacked variety to lend further assistance to the batsmen.
The four seamers performed well however, with Paul Sullivan beating the edge almost monotonously, and Phil Cuthbert and Peter Brown excelling in their efforts. But the Langleybury late order rallied with a string of boundaries, and Palmer (43 not out) and Thornton (25 not out) helped them on to a healthy 198-8.
Wooburn\s reply began well, as Cooper and Lawless subdued the early attack. David Smith then acclimatised to the wicket to hit a half-century, supported by a hard-hitting 23 from Angus Porter.
David Pidgeon mistimed his swipe at the penultimate ball, leaving Paul Sullivan needing a six off the last ball of the day. Sullivan was unable to oblige and Wooburn were left to rue another missed opportunity.
